TED LAMBERT WINS NATIONAL AMATEUR 100 MILES CYCLING

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night (PA) —Ted Lambert, the New Zealand Empire Games cycling representative, wound up his best season by winning the national amateur 100-mile road senior championship at Waikari. His time was 4hrs 44m in 41sec. It was a thrilling finish, with Lambert, who took the fastest time in the two big South Island amateur races—the Timaru to Chritschurch and the round the gorges—only one-fifth of a second ahead of Colin Shilton, his fellow Aucklander, who 12 years ago took the fastest time in the gorges race. In third place was Sam Taylor, a Canterbury rider. Hard riding and bad luck whittled down the field of 28 who started, and the scratchings were Alan Stones (Auckland) and G. Alexander, F. Sinclair and P. Murray, all of Wellington. Bishop, the Canterbury rider, who won the Timaru to Christchurch, was an early casualty in a big smash on the railway crossing in the Wairaki township. He came down heavily and was knocked unconscious. Placings were: E. Lambert (Auckland), 4hr 44min 41see, 1; C. W. Shilton (Auckland), 4hr 44min 41.2 sec, 2; S. Taylor (Christchurch), 4hr 44min 44.1 sec, 3; A. Weeney (Auckland), 4hr 44min 41.6 sec, 4; R. Hilder (Auckland) 4hr 44min 41.8 sec, 5.
