GAS FOR HYDROGEN BOMB IS NOW BEING MADE IN BRITAIN
LONDON, Oct. 30 (Rec 7 pm).— Scientists at Britain's atomic research centre at Harwell are now making a rare atomic gas which would form the main explosive in a hydrogen bomb. A Medical Research Council report disclosed this yesterday when it was stated that a sample of the gas, known scientifically as tritium, was provided by Harwell for certain tests. The Supply Ministry confirmed that the experiments were being made.
Professor Bruno Pontecorvo, the missing atom scientist, was one of the few men ■>-<h experience in handling tritium. He carried out pioneer research in Canada into energy release when tritium atoms break down. (Tritium is a super heavy form of hydrogen).
