BRITAIN WILLING TO NEGOTIATE WITH N.Z.
PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Last Night (PA).—The British Minister of Food (Mr. Maurice Webb) has undertaken to enter into negotiations for a longer term meat agreement with New Zealand if approached by the Government and the industry. This was stated, by the Minister of Marketing (Mr. Holyoake) tonighl, when he commented on a cablegram announcing that the United Kingdom had agreed to buy surplus Australian meat. “When I was in London last month I learned that discussions between the United Kingdom and Australia, aimed at initiating a 15-year agreement for the disposal of Australian beef and other meat, had reached an advanced stage," said Mr. Holyoake. “I interviewed Mr. Webb and suggested that the way should be opened for a similar arrangement with New Zealand if this was desired by the industry and the Government. Mr. Webb undertook to enter into discussions at any time if a request came from the interested parties in New Zealand. “The substance of our discussions was confirmed by letters between Mr. Webb and myself. On my return to New Zealand I immediately communicated them to the Government and the Meat Board," said the Minister.
