Why Was T.B. Act Not Applied

PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Last Night (PAL —In the House of Representatives today, during discussion of the vote for medicine benefits in the Social Security fund estimates Mr. Moohan (Opp., Petone) asked why the provisions of the Tuberculosis Act. 1948 were not applied to the Maori woman, suffering seriously from tuberculosis, who died at a faith-heal-ing meeting near Napier recently. The Minister of Health (Mr. Watts) said that the Tuberculosis Act was passed for the purpose of protecting sufferers from tuberculosis and the rest of the community. It was often very difficult to prevail on those people to go into a hospital. He thought it might have been advisable for the nurse in the district concerned to have consulted with her medical officer with the view of compelling the woman to enter a hospital.
