Racing For Union Boat Club Fours Started
Racing for the Union Boat Club Fours trophy commenced last evening, when nine crews took part in three races comprising the first round. In the first event. E. Stewart won from R. Malpas and R. Howard by the margin of one length. Stewart, rowing a lively stroke, jumped into an early lead which he maintained right through to the finish. Similar tactics were employed by LHill in the second race, in which he defeated B. Sloan and J. Ryan. Keeping up the pressure right from the start Hill opened up a gap of a length, and despite strenuous endeavours by his rivals he withstood all their challenges and won by three quarters of a length. G. Mill scored a comfortable win ever R. Payne and J. White in the final race of the evening, and at no stage did he appear likely to lose the big margin he secured early in the race, having three lengths in his favour at the finishing line. This evening the repechage heats and semi-finals will be rowed, and keen interest in the results is being displayed.
