Rebels On Ambon Island Resist Republicans

JACARTA, Oct 22.—The Indonesian military invasion of rebel-held Ambon Island is not going as well as expected, according to usually well-informed sources.

Republican troops who invaded Ambon on September 28 and occupied the northern half of the island have been halted by fierce Ambonese resistance at the one-kilometre-wide isthmus wnich links the southern half.

The Indonesian forces are believed to be planning an amphibious invasion of southern Ambon in the event or failure to break through the Ambonese defence line at the isthmus.

Radio Ambon yesterday reported that an Indonesian navy corvette had heavily shelled Ambon town last Friday night. The Indonesian Defence Ministry is maintaining a complete blackout on official news of the Ambon offensive.
