South Koreans Less Than 30 Miles From Northern Capital; U.S. And Australians Closing In
SEOUL, Oct. 17 (Recd. 12.50 a.m.) —South Korean forces were reported today less than 30 miles from the North Korean capital, Pyongyang. United States Ist Cavalry troops, supplied from a new advanced air base, struck across open country for Pyongyang only 40 miles away.
The multi-pronged offensive by more than 60.000 American, South Korean, British, and Australian troops made rapid gains against slackening enemy resistance. South Korean Ist. Division forces were reported 10 miles beyond Suan—less than 30 miles from Pyongyang. Latest reports placed the spearheads of the first cavalry four miles north ot Sohung, on the main road from Seoul to Pyongyang. The British Commonwealth Brigade continues to round up prisoners in the Kumchon area. British troops are reported to have entered Sariwon, 35 air miles from Pyongyang, this morning. On the east coast, the South Koreans are nearing the twin industrial cities of Hamhung and Hungnam.
