LONG SERVICE TO THE QUEEN’S OWN BAND

Presentations To Mr. Charles Humphreys

A long service record by a Wanganui bandsman was recognised at a social evening last night at the Queen Alexandra Band room, when Mr. Charles Humphreys, who has been a playing member of bands since 1898, received presentations from his fellow bandf/.ien and supporters of the Queen’s Own. Mr. Humphreys joined the band, then the T.Y.M.I. (Trinity Young Men’s Institute) in 1898. He has continued as a member ever since, serving with the band when it was the City Band and later when it became the Queen's Own. He was not cnly a player in the oand, but he tc,)k a full share of its administrative duties. On his retirement this year he was sergeant and honorary treasurer, fie had a long association with the late Captain George Buckley in contesting.

Presentations were made to Mr. Humphreys last night. The retiring president, Mr. Frank Yewen, made a presentation of a beautifully engraved gold and silver life membership badge and also an illuminated address, signed by all the members of the band. On behalf of the bandsmen i hemselves, Mr. F. Watson, bandmaster, presented a travelling sot. Mr. Yewen and Mr. Watson both spoke highly of Mr. Humphtcys’ long service and the conductor, Mr. E. O. Schnack, endorsed their remarks, paying tribute to Mr. Humphreys’ Qualities as a bandsman. It is believed that Mr. Humphreys’ length of service with the band is a New Zealand record; if not, it ranks with the best. In his reply, Mr. Humphreys said that, he had always derived a great deal of pleasure from his work and association with the band. He would be ready at all times in the future to continue that help
