SUSPECTED FOOD POISONING AT LOCAL BODY CONFERENCE

CHRISTCHURCH. Last Night (PA) —One delegate to the annual conference of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association at Akaroa last week has died from what is believed to be food poisoning. Several other delegates have been ill. and a thorough investigation is being made by the Health Department. The chairman of the Cheviot County Council (Mr Dugald McLaren) became ill when returning from Akaroa on Friday. He died on Sunday. Mr McLaren and five other persons became ill.

The Medical Officer of Health (Dr J. H. Blakelock) said this evening that he could not say at present what had caused the trouble. Thorough investigations were under way, and an inspector would visit Akaroa tomorrow morning. He added that he had only been notified of the cases this morning, and there had been somi difficulty in getting details because Ihe delegates had returned to their homes.
