'Three Killed And Many Hurt In Mass Climb Up Volcano

MEXICO CITY, Oct. 15 (Recd 10.35 pm).—Three persons were killed, ten were seriously injured and 400 slightly hurt this week-end in a mass attempt to climb Popocatepetl volcano 17.887 feet high About 5000 people began the mass ascent of the mountain to attend a religious ceremony blessing the banners of the mountaineering clubs of North and South America and Europe. A blinding snowstorm hit the peak while the climbers were on it. A youth died in a vain attempt to save the life of a girl climber. The girl slipped and was sliding down a snow slope when the youth struggled across the slope and tried to halt her. She knocked him off balance and both fell over a 600-foot precipice. A mdh also fell to his death. About 300 people reached the summit of the mountain, but the priest who was to conduct the ceremony failed to arrive and it was cancelled.
