Silk And Collins Win The Amateur Foursomes For Second Year In Succession

Professional Title Retained By

Fuller And Waite

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night (P.A.)—The New Zealand amateur foursomes golf title was won for the second year in succession by J. F. Collins and B. JI. Silk (Wanganui) on Saturday, when the annual New Zealand open tournament began on the Christchurch club’s course at Shirley. The professional title was retained by N. H. Fuller and J. K. Waite. The new open foursomes title wasavon by Silk and Collins, whose score of 145 for the 36 holes was one stroke better than that returned by Fuller and Waite.

Apart from these two pairs the scoring generally was not good and under the conditions should have been better. J. W. Jackson and D. L. Woon, four times winners of the Canterbury foursome championship, were disappointing in both rounds and finished four strokes behind Collins and Silk. In the professional championship. R. H. Glading and A. J. Shaw failed badly in the second round after returning a sound 72 in the morning. The scoring ill the foursomes showed that the course will provide a good test, as the scratch score was bettered only three times during the day. The weather was ideal, with the course playing faster than it had been earlier in the week. The greens, al- i though true for putting, were fairly fast for pitching. One of the outstanding performances was by the two Christchurch amateurs, R.'R. Champtaloup and W. D. Armstrong. Champtaloup and Armstrong, after leading the field with Collins and Silk with a 73, started well again in the second round. They had everv chance of winning or tieing for the title with only three holes to play, but a disastrous finish of 76 placed them six shots behind the winners. A SOUND DISPLAY. Collins and Silk gave a very sound display in both rounds and were seldom in anv trouble. Collins, who is playing in his second open champio: - ship, is a forceful player. He gets exceptional length with his drives and on Saturday was finding the greens regularly with firmly struck. iron shots. He also putted extremely | well. Silk’s wide experience in tour-1 nament plav makes them a formidable pair. Silk was also very reliable * and their afternoon round of 72 con- j tained only two blemishes. These were at th° scratch 5 fourth and the scratch 5 16th. Jackson and Woon did not get settled in either round and were struggling for their figures all day. HOLDEN IN FORM. The amateur champion, J. Holden, was in excellent form, and although he and A. R. Kitto did not score particularly well, he was very impressive with all his shots. Both Holden and Kitto were driving well and experienced no difficulty with the length of the course They had bad starts on each round, being out in 41 in the morning and 39 in the afternoon, two strokes better than scratch. Each rourj included some very fine play. Holden was pitching his short iron shots well, the best of these being at the 16th in the first round, when his shot finished a few inches from the hole from 120 yards out. The two Auckland players. R. Hay Mackenzie and P. G. F. Smith, had tw’o bad rounds of 80. Smith, who won the amateur title at Balmacewan in 1938, was not finding the greens at the short holes and they lost too many strokes at these holes. T. P. Jones and W. E. Jones, the prominent Maori competitors from | Taumarunui, also had an off day and returned cards of 80 and 81. W. Jones, one of the longest hitters in New Zealand, consistently hooked his drives in the morning round and with the rough in its thick state, created some very difficult seconds for his brother. Fuller and Waite thoroughly deserved their win in the professional event. Waite is not a particularly strong player, but he played soundly in both rounds. His shots through the fairway were particularly good. If he showed any weakness, it was with his approach nutts with which he was often too strong. Fuller also played well and was striking al! his shots well. Their afternoon round of 27 could have been improved upon with some more accurate putting. They three-putted on three greens on the wav home after starting with two brilliant birdies at the 10th and 11th holes. Their total of 146 was one stroke more than their winning total at Hastings last year.
