The Unicom And Mainbrace Are Fancied Candidates For Great Northern Guineas

AUCKLAND, Last Night (Special).—Feature event tomorrow at Ellerslie for the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting will be the Mitchelson Cup, which carries a stake of £2250 and will be the first “leg” of the totalisator double, with the Flying Handicap as the second.

More than usual interest will be taken in the Great Northern Guineas because The Unicorn is expected to avenge his Avondale Guineas defeat, and there are some promising northern youngsters in the Welcome Stakes. AUCKLAND, Last Night, (Special). —The going should be at its best, as with rain earlier in the week there will be some give in the turf. Though confined to local horses, the Mitchelson Cup bears ap open appearance, and luck in the running may have considerable bearing on the ultimate result. High Glory heads the field and she is expected to go well again, for it is probable that the course at headquarters will suit her better than that at Te Aroha. Conspiracy finished well for fifth last week and Caber Fae should be about right after his racing last month. Wonder Boy, last year’s winner, failed to run on at Te Aroha and a better prospect may be The Gent, after a very meritorious win at Paeroa recently over this distance. Frontier Mac and Reparation will need to improve a bit, but Chung Chong went well last time out and is a likely improver. Florida was the unlucky horse in the Somers Cup last week, having to come from the ruck. Her finishing effort was long and well sustained to the bitter end. If she is more handly placed tomorrow her turn will come. Foxtavia has not reproduced his Wanganui form in the north, but Beau Pari, a winner at Thames at his last appearance, has a good staying lightweight's chance. Cowper won well enough at Te Aroha to be favoured once again. Ozami, who nearly pulled off a big surprise last week, is in again with the minimum. There may well be another surprise, but form seems to point to Conspiracy and Florida. Not so big is the field in the Shorts Handicap, but it is not an easy one to pick. Correspond is the most likely improver of the field. Gold Script, who is well forward, and the speedy promoted hack. Miss Kanui, may complicate the issue. Good Century has had a run and as he went well for a first appearance, he may upset calculations. Royal Scot, Lord Foxbridge and Tommy Gun are capable of surprising. But one comes back to Correspond. It is to be hoped that both Mambrace and The Unicorn leave the stalls on terms in the Guineas, in which case The Unicorn is expected to win, although his chief opponent seems generally to pull out a bit more than expected. Sirnelli is an improving hurdler and Motunach should go well in the hack race. The following should go well tomorrow:— Trial Hurdles.—Scotch Meadow, Sirnelli, Clear View. Great Northern Guineas.—The Unicorn, Mainbrace, Earldom, Gordon Hack Handicap—Robert Craig, Motunach, Reliance. Mitchelson Cup. —Conspiracy, Florida, Cowper. Hunters' Steeplechase.—Trench ♦late.
