HIGH QUALITY FIELD ENTERED FOR TODAY’S BIG HARRIER RACE
Some of the best long distance runners in the lower portion of the North Island have nominated for the big harrier road race from Bulls to Marton this afternoon. Among the harriers who have entered are two New Zealand champions—L. Shadbolt, the present N.Z. cross-country title-holder and Gordon Bromley the N.Z. Marathon champion who competed in the Empire Games at Auckland this year, and won the 20-mile Gold Cup race at Trent ham last Saturday. Besides the senior event of nine miles there will be a colts race from Crofton Store to Marton a distance of 24 miles. Excellent entries have been received for both events, there being 47 in the senior rac and 20 in the colts. The trophy at stake in the senior event is the Chris Marshall Cup which was won last year by R. Hepworth (Feilding). Hepworth, off 4.40, will be defending the cup this afternoon. The quality of the senior field has never been better. Besides the appearance of Shadbolt and Bromley, another well-known cross-country runner who has entered is S. Jelley (Dannevirke) who made the fastest time in the race last year of 48.2 min., and recently took the time honours in the Napier-Hastings road race of 12 miles. R. Lamberton (Feilding) is another high class distance runner. He finished second to Bromley in the 20mile Gold Cup race at Trentham last Saturday. □the is expected to show up prominently this afternoon are A. Jelley, D. Robertson (Marton), R. Hepworth, K. Galloway. J. Willers (Feilding), H. Hopper, C. Udy (Wanganui) and J. Scott (Palmerston North). The record for the race is 47.48 min. registered by Frank Hill (Marton) in 1937. The senior race will start from the Bulls Post Oflice at 2 p.m and will finish at the Marton Post Ofiice about 3 p.m. The colts’ race starts from the Crofton Store at 2.15 p.m. Competitors for Bulls are to assemble at the Marton Sports Hall at 1.15 p.m. sharp for transport and the colts at 1.45 p.m. Both events are being staged by the Marton Harrier Club.

A fancy dress ball was held in the Marton Victory Hall recently, when over 400 parents, friends and pupils of the Marton Junction School were present. The Mayor and Mayoress, Mr. and Mis T. E. Barton, and Mrs F. A. Hempieman, wife of a former head’ master, were guests of the school com mittee. The junior pupils, numbering more than 100, opened proceedings with a grand march, followed by various dances after which the 120 senior pupils entertained with their grand march and dances. Music was supplied by Miso P. McChesney, and Miss M. McChesney assisted by Mrs L. J. McChesney, their combined efforts contributing to the success of the ball. Directing the dances were the headmaster, Mr. L. J. Tank, the infant mistress, Miss F. P. Martin, and another member of the teaching staff, Miss Mott. During the evening Mr. Barton gave a short adress in which he thanked all who had made the evening such a success. Six relays of supper were served to pupils and parents on tables decorated in the school colours. Special work was done by the women s committee. Winner of the competitions were Mr J. Allan and Mr. A. Goodwin. METHODIST CHURCH. The monthly family worship service will be held at the Marton Methodist Church tomorrow morning. All parents ar e invited to join in worship with their children. Both services will be conducted by the Rev. H. Prowse, who will take as his evening subject “Knowing all the Answers.” The monthly service will be held at Porewa School at 2.30 p.m. MARRIED V. SINGLE HOCKEY. The annual womens hockey match between the married v. single members of the Marton Athletic Club will be played on Centennial Park this afternoon, commencing at 2.30 p.m. The teams are:— Married: J.
