United Nations Forces Mass For Battle Of North Korea
Australians In The Build-Up; Signs Of Communist Stand At Wonsan
SEOUL, Oct. 6 (Recd. 8.45 p.m.)—British and Australian troops are among the United Nations forces massing along the •isth parallel today. They joined United States Marines, infantry, and South Koreans who have been building up for the past week on the border.
United Nations forces available for an all-out offensive are estimated to total 175,000 men. Allied planes smashed two largescale enemy attempts to move ammunition and equipment to units setting up a defence line north of the parallel Pilots said one convoy of between 40 and 50 vehicles was broken up while moving south from Sari won, which is 35 miles below Pongyang. Another convoy of about 60 vehicles was attacked as it moved west from Pyongyang towards Wonsan, an industrial city on the east coast. South Korean 3rd Division troops, who pushed over 60 miles inside North Korea, were last reported within 50 miles of Wonsan. Evidence that the North Koreans intend to continue fighting came from a captured Communist officer, who said that all recent orders called for the North Koreans to make a stand at Wonsan.
