Possibility Of A Man-Made Moon Circling The Earth

PARIS, Oct. 5 (Recd. 7pm).— Would-be travellers through space will meet in London next year to discuss the creation of an “artificial moon. ’ M. Alexandre Ananoff. 40-year-old French president of the Astronauts Space Travellers, said today that an artificial moon is already theoretically possible and its construction is merely a matter of money and practical research. The man-made satellite would probably take the form of a rocket fitted with scientific measuring instruments revolving about the earth at a distance of 350 to 750 miles. The real moon is nearly 240,000 miles from the earth's surface.

M. Ananoff emphasised “such an artificial satellite would have no military use. It could not observe enemy territory because from that height the intervening clouds would obscure everything.” Delegates to the International Astronautical Congress, which ended yesterday, estimated that it would be 20 to 40 years before people would fly to the moon.
