Wanganui Artist Captures M.Z. Scenery In Oil And Water Colour
The delightful and spacious scenery which abounds aplenty in New Zealand has been captured with a joyous perception in oil and water-colour by the Wanganui artist, T. L. Sperring, whose exhibition ot 42 paintings ot landscape and still life was opened in the D.I.C. yesterday by Mr F. W. Gilligan. headmaster of the Wanganui Collegiate School. “Speaking as a schoolmaster,” said
Mr Gilligan. “I would say that Mr Sperring’s work has improved considerably during the last few terms and we can expect soon to classify him in the alpha plus (lass.” Recalling the words spoken of Sir Chrstopher Wren, the great English architect, “If you require a monument. look round,’ Mr Gilligan said (hat Mr Sperring’s work w.as a monument to the beauties of the Now Zealand countryside. It was always a great joy to study the work of an enthusiast. and the paintings in th'' exhibition depicted the work ol an enthusiast. Associated with Mr Gilligan were Mi’s Gilligan, Mr and Mrs Snerring. Hip linn. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., and Mrs Rogers. Mr Sperring’s water-colours are confidently executed, his paint flows freely and the colours he chooses are the result of his own perceptions. for he copies no man. To the lover of the Now Zealand landscape in all its splendid var’etv Mr Snerring has • thing to say both sincere and vital.
