RUGBY COMPETITION The senior one-round competition was continued on Saturday, when Pirates defeated Utiku Old Boys by 10 I-oinU to three anu Manga,.eka scored a big win over Army to the tune of 22-3 in a match played at Waiouru. Mangaweka s score comprised four tries, two penalty goals and two conversions. Pirates v. Utiku Old Boys. Pirates defeated Utiku 0.8. by two converted tries to an unconverted try in the main game at Taihape on Saturday. U. 0.8. \ver e unfortunate in losing Roydhouse (centre) early in the game and also their half-back, W. Maher, at a later stage. Roydhouse was replaced by Diehl and Maher by Wilton. Logan moved in from second five-eighth to half-back when Maher left the field. Pirates led 5-0 at hail time. There was not a great deal to choose between the two teams but, on the general run of play, the blacks deserved their win. Wheeler made some good breaks and was always dangerous. Derbidge was good on defence. Betts went well behind the scrum and his try was a fine individual effort. Rackley’s try was also a gem. Logan and Topliss were the pick of the U. 0.8. backs. O’Hanlon played a useful game as full-back and later on the wing. McCulloch was outstanding in the Utiku 0.8. pack. Pirates first score came when Betts short punted and chased the ball over the U. 0.8. line and scored. Wheeler had no difficulty in converting. This was the only try of the first spell. McCulloch scored U.0.8.’s only try after Loga n bad made the opening. Collier missed with the kick. Rackley caused a stir when he badly beat the opposition to score beside the posts. Wheeler goaled. Crimp put in one or two good runs. McCulloch missed two fairly easy kicks and Wheeler missed one. Logan just missed with a “pot” at goal. Mr. C. H. Transom was referee. The teams were:— Utiku Old Boys: O'Hanlon, Collier, Roydhouse, Donald, Logan, Topliss, Maher, McCulloch, McMahon, Spiers, Bremner, Riley, Hulena, Thurston. Pirates: Troon, Rackley, Jensen, Crimp, Wheeler, Derbidge, Betts, Infield, Howden, Bader, Hodge, Horton, Sinclair, Hamilton, Nicholls. Third Grade Match. The third grade match between Taihape and Rangitikei resulted in a win for the visitors by 14 points to nil. Rangitikei were superior in all departments of the game and well deserved the success. Taihape’s display was disappointing. The Rangitikei half-back, Kane, played an outstanding game and was a thorn in the side of the opposition. Murray was impressive on the wing and scored, a great runaway try after running about 60 yards. Whale also went well as first five-eighth and scored a very nice try. Wasson proved himself a good forward and registered two well deserved tries. Kane made the opening that resulted in Wasson’s second try. In the closing stages of the game Horton had a pot at goal, which appeared to go over, but the referee ruled otherwise. Whale's try was converted by Hunter. The teams were:—

Two more K Force volunteers from Taihape have entered Linton camp. They are Messrs C. Chesnutt and L. G. Simpson. Mr. Simpson left Taihape o n Friday and Mr. Chesnutt departed yesterday morning. Two Inebriates Fined. Two offending inebriates were convicted and fined by Mr. W. Annear, J.P., onSaturday morning. Soldiers Fined for Fighting. Two Maori soldiers from Waiouru, Henare Apatori Whakatope, aged 18 years, and Rangi Goffe, aged 21 years, were convicted and fined £2 and £1 respectively, by Mr. E. Loader, J.P., in the Taihape Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Senior-Sergeant R. Griffiith, who conducted the prosecution for the police, said that Constable D. N. Ingram was on duty on Saturday, when he saw the two accused fighting outside a local hotel at 5.45 p.m. One soldier had his coat off. When asked for an explanation, Goffe stated that Whakatope had made an offensive remark about Goffe's sister.
