SONATA FANCIED FOR MAIN CARTERTON RACE

Strong fields of useful horses are engaged, at the Carterton Racing Club’s meeting today, and form will be of value with the Hawke's Bay, Masterton and Trentham meetings ahead. Wairarapa. Trentham and ’Bay stables provide the majority of acceptors, together with a fair representation from other centres. Principal event and first “leg” of the double is the Wairarapa County Handicap, for which there is a capacity field of twenty, headed by Lord Azure. Winner of the Heathcote Handicap under 9.8 and the Islington Handicap under 10.1 on the last two days of the Grand National meeting, Lord Azure has proved himself a high-class middle-distance performer, and even at 9.9 under the 7.0 minimum he will have to be respected.

Probably The Laird (8.8) will make the strongest appeal, for this Coronach four-year-old has already shown excellent form, though over shorter distances. Fresh up this season and obviously in need of a race, The Laird finished third to Virginius and Spandau at the combined hunt clubs’ meeting at Hastings. A fortnight later he worried Davey Jones out of the honours in the Robinson Handicap at Fox. ton, and*the win of Davey Jones last Saturday adds to the merit of The Laird’s performance. Last season as a three-year-old The Laird won the Wairarapa Cup, so he has proved himself over the mile and a-quarter. Beau Coeur has been off the scene for a couple of months, Clyde Bridge failed at the Grand National meeting, and Conclusion has failed to reproduce the form which enabled him to take high rank just over a year ago. A better prospect would be Sonata, who was third to La Modelie and Bar Garrette in the Bergin Handicap at Foxton. Sonata comes from the same stable as Lord Azure and Conclusion and she may be the elect of the trio. Of the remainder Full of Fun, a winner at Hastings, Sly Gold, winner of a hurdle race at Foxton, and Trusting, third at Riccarton, may have the best chances. Backers may declare for Sonata, The Laird and Lord Azure. Some good sprinters are engaged in the Taratahi Handicap, run over six furlongs. Golden Spa was in a high class as a three-year-old last season and may run a good race fresh up. Virginius showed at Hastings that he retains his brilliance, and Angell finished brilliantly at Wanganui to take second place behind Davey Jones. This trio may be most prominent at the finish.

Nine furlongs is the distance of the Bunny Memorial Hack Handicap, the second "leg” of the double. First Offence is an improver who was just beaten into third place behind Zala and Arvastar at Foxton at his last start after having gained a win and a second in two earlier essays. Master Crusoe and Sea Shanty are capable of running out the distance strongly and may improve on their most recent efforts. Princess Diane looked like developing into a good performer last season, and Show Mist has run some promising races, being placed four times in her last five starts. She may do better. now that she has joined R. A. Tudor’s stable at Opaki. Some of the remainder have little recent form, but Show Mist, First Offence and Master Crusoe are three that appeal. The maiden field has been divided to form two separate races, and in the first of these provision has been made for divisions. Likely horses on form include:— Carrington Highweight. —Foxtonian, Zealander, Dark Flash. Maiden Plate No. I.—First Division: General Grant, Red Diatnond. Second Division: Professor, Ngatere.
