NEW THEORY OF CAUSE OF INFANTILE PARALYSIS ADVANCED
NEW YORK, Sept. 8 (Rec. 9 pm).— A professor of Yale University today advanced a new theory about the origin of infantile paralysis. He said his researches had revealed the possibility that the virus of the disease was manufactured in the nucleus of cells in the spinal cord. The professor is Doctor Joseph Melnick, Associate Professor of Microbiology at the Yale School of Medicine. He is one of the leading investigators in the field of infantile paralysis. Dr. Melnick presented his findings to the Congress of the International Society for Cell Biology. He said bis research, if verified in subsequent work, suggested also that small amounts of infantile paralysis might be locked away in the nucleus of a cell for as long as several months after the disease, and recovery had occurred. This opened a new field of investigation on the significance of the duration of immunity and resistance to second attacks of the disease. Dr. Melnick said his research indicated that the virus was present both within the nucleus of the cell and the fluid which bathed the nucleus. The theory gave an explanation for the way in which the virus attacked and ultimately caused a breakdown of the cells in the spinal ord.
