HABIT OF BARMEN SMOKING ON DUTY IS CRITICISED

DUNEDIN, Yesterday.—The habit of many barmen of smoking while serving drinks was deplored by 'the Dunedin Licensing Committee at a meeting this morning. The chairman, Mr J. D. Willis, S.M., said complaints had been received about ash from cigarettes and pipes dropping into the liquor, and it was to be hoped barmen would be instructed by licensees to stop the practice. There was no objection to barmen smoking while not actually serving drinks, said Mr Willis.
