CHURCH OPPOSED TO BETTING POOLS IN NEW ZEALAND

Concern about the possibility of introducing betting pools into New Zealand was expressed in a statement issued by the Rev. J. S. Somerville of Wellington, convener of the Presbyterian Church Committee on Public Questions. “The hint by the blew Zealand Council of Sport that it was interested in such a project in this country has been viewed with the utmost concern,” the statement reads. "The Church s mind has been represented to those involved. Such a move would increase the gambling menace to a far greater extent, and deal a real blow to amateurism in sport. We believe that the country as a whole would be against such proposals.”
