MARTON O.B. FOOTBALL CLUB TARGET FOR CONGRATULATIONS
About 100 players and supporters attended the annual dinner of the Mar-1 ton Old Boys’ Football Club on Satur- j day night. The president, Mr. L. K. Mcßeth, presided and those present included the mayor (Mr. T. E. Bat- | ton), the patron (Mr. W. E. Simpson:, representatives of the Rangltikei Rugby Union and the Referees’ Association, and players from kindred clubs. During the evening opportunity was I taken by the president to present to the club's patron, Mr. Simpson, the official 0.8. Club badge. Congratulations were showered upon the various teams on their achievements during the season in winning the junior, third and fourth grade competitions and being runnersup in the senior championship. “Had it not been for Athletic, Old Boys ■ would probably have won all tour, championships,” remarked a speaker, smilingly when eulogising the club's performances. The undoubted strength of the teams in the lower grades wa» particularly stressed by some speakers. This they claimed augured well for the senior team of the future. Speakers also praised the team-spirit whlcn was very evident in the clubs. The toast list honoured was: "The King," Mr. Mcßeth; “Marton Old Boys' Football Club,’ proposed by Mt. H. Murray Reid—responded to by Mr I. Barton, captain of the senior team, “Rangitikei Rugby Union," Mr. o Partridge—Mr. E. Pickford; "Re ferees' Association’’ Mr. E. ZanderMr. J. Dickson; “Kindred Clubs,” Mt H. G. Stewart—Messrs. A. Watt, F. W England (Hunterville), K. Montgomerie (Bulls), A. Bostock (Athletic), "St. John Ambulance,” Mr M. GrayM T. E. Barton; "Coaches,” Mr H, Parkes—Messrs. N. Kane (seniors), Chas Marr (junior), W. Nichols (thirds), N. Miles (fourth); “Press,” Mr. H. P. Stewart—representatives present. A special toast was that to three members of the senior team —Messrs J. Frederick, W. Wilson and O. Summerton—who are members of KForce. This toast was proposed by Mr Mcßeth and enthusiastically honoured, Mr. Mcßeth' wishing the members r, safe return to New Zealand. Trophies Won. As the club had now practically every trophy in the union, the official table was littered with cups and shields which were presented by th« president to the captains of the successful teams. The trophies won and presented were: Junior championship shield, Croad Irwin Cup, Bengal Cup (Mr. T. Taylor, captain); third grade championship cup, Cairncross Cup, Hoskings Cup and the trophy for the; annual third grade seve.t-a-side (Mr R. Ingle, captain); Fourth grade championship cup, O. Reid, captain. Silver cups were presented to the best club man in each team and the winners were, the donor’s name being in parentheses: Senior E. Zander (Mr A- T. Gatrell); junior, A. Thomson (Mr. H. G. Stewart); Thirds, T Ireland (Mr Gatrell); Fourths, O. Reid (Mr Gatrell). Three special trophies presented by Messrs. Cedric and Chas. Marr for the junior team were won as follows; best forward, R. Lourie; best back, D. Kingham; player scoring most points, A. Stewart. In was announced that during the season Stewart had scored 100 points in tries and goals.
RANGITIKEI THIRD GRADE REFS TO PLAY TAIHAPE.
The following team lias been selected to play for Rangitikei in the third grade representative Rugby match against Taihape at Taihape next Saturday:— Fullback, B. Black (Hunt); threequarters, A. Palmer (Athletic), D. Muray (OB), K. Poppe (OB); fiveeighths, T. Knight (OB), P. Whale (Athletic); half, L. Kane (OB); back of scrum, M. Burnette (Hunt); middle row, D. Wasson (Athletic), L. Dailey (Athletic), L. Simpson (OB), T. Ireland (OB); front row, N. Martyn (Athletic), R. Hunter (Athletic), G, Adams (Athletic). Reserves, J. Smith (Hum), D. Weber (Athletic), G. Ward (Athletic) backs; W. Higginson (Athletic), J. Craig (Hunt). Players to supply own white shorts. The bus will leave Marton at 9.30 a.m. The manager of the team is Mr K. Kerr.
BASKETBALL
Basketball concludes in Marton for : this season next Saturday, when | championship matches between Mar-1 ton and Te Kawau club teams will [ precede an end-of-season tourna-1 ment. Some fifteen team are expected to compete in this tournament for I the cup at present held by Maori ; Giris’ College. Much interest, will centre in the performance of the “A” I team from T.MM.G.C. against the leading Te Kawau teams.
