City Council Plans For Improving Water Supply From Okehu
The Wanganui City Council is calling tenders for about, three and a quarter miles of 16in diameter steel pipes for duplicating the water supply pipeline between Okehu and the city. The scheme is being financed by a £30,000 loan approved by ratepayers at a poll taken on October 26, 1949.
Because of the uncertainty of the steel position, the calling of tenders was delayed, but it is hoped that with an improvement the pipes wll be available. Duplication of the pipeline between Okehu and the city has been described as essential if adequate supplies are to be assured during future summer months.
From time to time the city engineer (Mr L. F. Row) and reports from the Works Committee have stressed the urgency of this duplicat on work being undertaken. It will bring 20 per cent more Okehu dam and Kai iwl spring water into Wanganui at a time when it is most needed.
Future use of Virginia Lake as an emergency source of supply will be eliminated. This source, not always satisfactory, has been in use for several successive summers.
In the past few years breaks have occurred in the 46-year-old 12in. main which have caused brief, but complete, disruptions to the flow of water.
