Damaged Railway Engine Limps Home From Hawera
Ihe small “Ww” tank locomotive Wiin,i r.;ei the full force of nine run* c.way wagons at Hawera on Tuesday night limped into Wanganui late yesterday afternoon under its own steam. Th e engine ran light at reduced speed Irom Hawera during the afternoon and last night was stabled at the Wanganui depot. Ultimately, it will go to the East Town Sheps for repairs. The cowcatcher was damaged and the steel footplate in front of the locomotive so badly crumpled that the centre of it was thr Ist well under the boiler. The headlight was also smashed and bent well back, but considering the force of the impact when lhe runaway wagons smashed into the locomotive, the damage was remarkablv light. The track was clea”ed parly yesterday morning and no delays occurred to the principal trains.
