PERSONALS.
Mr A. J. W. Hodder lias been reelected president of the Wanganui Trotting Club. Me. J. Tyson, manager of the Christchurch branch of the Bank of Australasia, has been transferred to Auckland as manager. The Rev. Keith Elliott, V.C., who has been padre at Linton Military Camp, has become assistant missioner to the Rev. Harry Squires at the Wellington City Mission. Mr Elliott won his Victoria Cross at 'Ruweisat in 1942. Mr. B. J. Allen, of London, arrives in New Zealand from Australia this week to undertake a three months' lecture tour of the Dominion on behalf of the New Zealand branch of the British-Israel World Federation. Later he will cover the principal cities of Australia.
Mr. R. J. Mills. Mayor of Mount Eden, will not seek re-election at the forthcoming election. He has been a member of the council for 20 years and has served 12 years as mayor. The deputy-mayor, Mr. A. C. Johns, intends to stand for the mayoralty. He was a candidate in 1941.
Mr. J. L. Croakley has been nominated by the Auckland Citizens’ and and Ratepayers' Association for the Mayoralty. Mr Croakley, who is at present overseas on a visit, has been senior member of the council for the past nine and a-half years. Professor Edward Hughes, 32-year-old senior lecturer in philosophy at the University ot North Wales, Bangor, has been appointed to the new Ghair of Philosophy at Victoria Universty College. A graduate of Glasgow University with double first class honours in Philosophy and English Literature, Professor Hughes also is an Anglican Minister.—(P.A.).
Well-known throughout the Dominion as an authority on lire brigade matters, Mr. Arthur Garratt, aged SO, died today at Thames. He was the holder of the gold star and was superintendent of Thames Brigade for over 20 years. He was also president of the United Fire brigades Association for several years and represented it at a conference in London in 1926. (P.A.).
Mr. Keith Caldwell, a leading Nev. Zealand cornet player, will leave; Wellington by th.? Akaroa tomorrow (Friday) for England to join the C.W.S. Manchester Bond on a three-year contract. Mr. Caldwell, who Is 21 year., of age, was born in Westport and for five years was a member of the Hawera Municipal Bond. P.ecently he lias been with the Wellington Watersiders’ Band and h’s bcc n guest player with the Hutt Municipal Band.
