Rangitikei To Help Finance Fifth Plunket Shield Cricket Team
Negotiations leading up to the formation of a Central Districts Cricket Association to administer the llfth Plunket Shield cricket team, were outlined by Mr. N. V. Rix-Trott at a meeting of the management committee of the Rangitikei Cricket Association on Monday night. Mr. RixTrott, with Mr. A. B. Marshall, were the Rangitikei delegates at a meeting of combined minor associations, held recently in Palmermston North.
Mr. Rix-Trott said that to overcome the initial problem of finance, each of the associations—Hawke’s Bay, Southern Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Taranaki, Manawatu, Rangitikei, Wanganui, Nelson and Marlborough had been levied to raise a total of £350 and Rangitikei had been committed to find £25. The Central Districts’ first match was against Wellington in early December, and the first home ground had been allotted to Palmerston North with Taranaki taking the second home game, said Mr. Rix-Trott.
Mr. Rix-Trott, who was elected to the management committee of the new organisation, was congratulated upon his appointment. A resume of the business transacted at. the biennial conference of the New Zealand Cricket Council recently held in Christchurch, with particular reference to the formation of a fifth Plunket Shield team, was given by the Rangitikei delegate, Mr. C. R. Merrett (Mangaweka). The New Zealand Cricket Council advised that a grant of £125 had been made to Rangitikei, from the profits of the tour of the New Zealand team in England. To assist in the encouragement of cricket i n the Taihape district, the management committee decided to make a donation of £25 to the Taihape Sub-Association, from the N.Z.C.C. grant. Mr. Merrett thanked the committee for its generous action and said that the money would be of great assistance in fostering the game in Taihape. It was decided to call applications for the position of groundsman at the Marton Cricket Ground. It was stated that it was not always convenient for clubs to prepare their wickets each week, while the cutting of the outfield was another problem which had caused the management committee considerable concern in the past. It was decided to employ a groundsman two days a week. The annual meeting of the association is to be held in Marton on Monday, October 2. Prior to that date all clubs will hold their annual meetings to appoint delegates to attend the association meeting. A communication from the N.Z.C.C. stated that the financial returns of the Australian tour of New Zealand last season were a little disappointing and a loss of between £350 and £4OO was expected. PERSONAL. Mr. J. M. Grant, who leaves tomorrow to take up the position of headmaster at the Taneatua School, tendered his resignation as a member of the Rangitikei Cricket Association at a meeting held in Marton on Monday night. Mr. Grant has been , a member of the management committee for the past six years and for part of that period was chairman of the ground committee. In accepting Mr. Grant’s resignation with deep regret, the committee paid tribute to his work for cricket during his stay in Marton. O n Monday afternoon Mr. Grant was met bv members of the Marton D.H. School Home and School Association, of which he is a vicepresident.
