Both Rangitikei Rep. Rugby Teams Won Last Saturday

Rangitikei scored a doutile Rugby victory on Saturday, when the senior reps, defeated the Manawatu Colts at Feilding and the Rangitikei thirds had a six-point win over the Oroua juniors at Kimbolton. The game at Feilding was a bright one and the fluctuating fortunes always made the run of play interesting. Rangitikei's win thus keeps their unbeaten record for the season intact. Old Boys seniors scored an unexpectedly heavy win over Ohingaiti in the main club game at Marton. The curtain-raiser between the two local junior teams, Old Boys and Athletic, ended in a surprising win for Athletic over the championship winners. This was Old Boys' first defeat of the season in 14 games. It was also their last competition game, as next week they have drawn the bye, and will travel to Taihape to play Pirates for the McKee Cup. Perfect weather conditions prevailed for Saturday's matches and the grounds were on the hard side. Results were:— Representative: Rangitikei seniors 16, v. Manawatu Colts 14; Rangitikei thirds 12, v. Oroua juniors 6. Senior club: Marton Old Boys 26, v. Ohingaiti 0. The Athletic v. RataBulls game was postponed until a later date. Junior: Athletic 9, v. Marton Old Boys 8; Rata 6. v. Hunterville 3. Although pitted against a heavy team, the Rangitikei thirds rose to the occasion to defeat the Oroua juniors. Rangitikei forwards were outweighed and outplayed in the tight, but dominated the loose play. The Rangitikei backs, however, were faster and had more penetration than their opponents. All the winner’s 12 points of three tries and a penalty were scored by the rearguard, Oroua’s six points comprising a try and a penalty. The first half was bright and open, but after the interval Oroua tightened lhe game up considerably in the forwards. Furthermore, the Oroua forwards stood right up on the Rangitikei back line, .giving the visitors very little room in which to manoeuvre. Rangitikei’s half, L. Kane, played an out standing: "ame, while the fullback, B. Black, was a tower of strength. The two best Rangitikei forwards were perhaps J. Wasson and L. Dailey.

Tries for Rangitikei were scored by D. Murray, L. Kane and P. Whale, the last mentioned also kicking a nenalty. MARTON SCHOOL-TEACHER TO BE HEADMASTER AT TANEATUA. Mr. J. M. Grant, who has been a member of the teaching staff in the secondary department of the Marton District High School for the past years, has been appointed headmaster of the Taneatua School, in the Bay of Plenty district. Mr. Grant expects to take up his new appointment some time next term.

Mr. Grant’s departure will be felt In many circles. With the rank of lieutenant. he is the officer commanding th e Marton D.H. School Cadets and played a prominent part in the coaching of the successful teams which won the Farl Roberts Imperial Challenge Shield and the Press Shield. He had also taken a very active interest in cricket, and besides being captain of the High School team in the Rangitikei cnicket competition, he is a member of the management committee. He was first the school delegate on the association, but for the last two seasons he has been a vice-president.' Until last season he was chairman of the Ground committee. Mr. Grant is also chairman of the M' rton P>oy Scouts’ committee, vice-nrosidene of the Home and School Association and secretary of the Merton branch of the New Fo-innd Educational Institute. Mrs. Grant hrs been a nrominent. worker of several organisations and, with her husband, is a noted hort’culfurist. She is a member of the Marlon Comnost Club an,-I the Marton branch of the Rangitikei Rose Society. She has been a freouent and successful exhibitor at various shows.
