GOOD PROGRAMME FOR DISTRICT BOXING CHAMPS ON MONDAY
(By Mr. T. Souter.) Nineteen fights are carded for decision at the 1950 Wanganui District Amateur Boxing Championships in the Opera House on Monday night. The winners will probably be sent to the New Zealand championships at Greymouth next month. Competition on Monday can be expected to be keen. Boxers from as far afield as New Plymouth, Normanby, Opunake, Patea. Taihape, Manawatu, and Dannovirke, together with Marton and Wanganui representatives, will be in .action on Monday night. Clive Head will defend his bantamweight title, but Don Davey had decided on a spell. J. Hall, last year’s Taranaki and>Wanganui light-heavy-weight champion, will meet W. Rice, of Wairarapa, who is a hard fighter. The welter class will need several fights to find the winner. In it, and the middleweight division, which has drawn three entrants, some quality boxing should be seen. Brian Frew, Tom DonoghyC Joe Adams, Kevin Cronin, and Clive Head will represent the local schools, while J. McDonnell may also be a contestant. The team should give a good account of itself. Marton also has a team of promising entrants. The Simcox brothers and Ted Gibbins can be relied upon to put up a good show. From further afield, a good featherweight boxer with New Zealand championship experience, Owen Smith (Opunake), should give a good demonstration in the ring. G. McDavitt. also of Opunake, and P. McKay, of New Plymouth, are also reliable performers.
