HARD RESISTANCE LINE NOT YET REACHED
TOKIO. July 21 (Recd.. 11.20 pm). General MacArthur’s mid-day communique today revealed that American forces in Korea, fighting stubborn rearguard actions, had not yet reached a line of hard resistance. This line will protect the maximum foothold defendable in Southern Korea until the American forces are sufficiently built up to launch a coun-ter-offensive. The foothold, is now reduced to about 90 miles north to south 100 miles west to east.
General MacArthur revealed that Taejon, because it had no dominating terrain, was not included in the original American holding plan. Its abandonment now means that the Americans. both on the northern and western flank of lheir stronghold, will be fighting astride barren valleys amid, steep mountains in this dusty, treeless country. -Reuter.
