Danger Of Small Aero Clubs Going Out Of Existence
WELLINGTON, Last Night (P.A.) —The danger of aero clubs in small districts going out of existence through lack of finance was stressed at today’s annual meeting of the Royal New Zealand Aero Club. A Government subsidy of £5OOO was recently received but when allocated on the basis of licences granted, the smeller clubs like Stratford and Kaitaia, would receive £25.
The president (Mr. H. D. Christie) advised delegates that a plan was under consideration by the Government which would have to be tried out. “Clubs will have to stand on their own feet. Wo do not want a subsidy,” he stated. “We want payment for services rendered."
It has been suggested that aero clubs should put their own houses in order said Mr. W. C. S. Leys (Auckland). “But by doing that we would have to put our flying rates up. Jhe Auckland Aero Club was compelled to do that and flying dropped at least 40 per cent." Mr, Leys remarked that aero clubs could train pilots 50 per cent, cheaper that the R.N.Z.A.F. “In this time of threat our only effective defences is nir strength.” he said. “Let us push the Government in the direction of national safety."
