The most common offenders were farmers. Shorthand Examinations.

Extra Import Licences. The Customs Department’s undertaking to consider the granting of extra import licences to cover the higher costs of imported goods is intended to apply more particularly to carpets, having regard to their supply position and the considerable increase in costs. This was stated by the Customs Department in a supplementary statement yesterday.—P.A.

Northerly Weather. After several days of southerly winds, reaching gale force early in the week, the wind changed to a northerly direction yesterday and temperatures were slightly higher. The wind was very light, however, and the sky was cloudy for the most part. Barometric pressure was still high at Castlecliff yesterday, the reading at 3-30 p.m. being 30.68in5. The barometer was falling slowly. A slight to moderate swell was running on the bar. Dredging Resumed.

After being delayed for two days early this week by southerly gales, dredging operations have been resumed at Castlecliff by the dredge Wanganui. The vessel could not work in the turning basin on Monday and Tuesday because of high winds, but a fresh start was made on Wednesday. Rugby Choir Chet red. About 600 Aucklanders yesterday afternoon cheered and whistled a choir of 32 men and called for encores. They had just heard the British Isles Rugby football team—probably the most musical team to visit the Dominion—wind-up a civic recep'Hon in the Town Hall. Conducted by the burly forward, Cliff Davies, the team sang in well-drilled harmony two traditional Welsh songs, “To Each One There is Hope” and “Little Saucepan.” Athletes who had competed at Eden Park at the Empire Games had told of the wonderful reception the;’ had been given and for that reason the team was happy to be playing there, said the manager (SurgeonCaptain E. L. Osborne). The team trained for about an hour in the morning on No. 1 ground at Eden Park. —P.A.
