SHIP ENTERS PORT WITH CARGO AFIRE
WELLINGTON, Yesterday (PA).— While the 7600-ton Liberty ship Rowanbank, bound from Auckland to Wellington, was pounded by heavy seas in Cook Strait last night, some of her cargo in number one and two hoLs, loaded with sulphur, caught on fire and the ship was in danger. Her master (Captain John Kemp) turned the ship from the wind and the Indian cre w worked feverishly to seal off the affected holds. The burning holds containing the inflammable cargo were smothered with steam and the flames were prevented from spreading. The ship made port at about 6 a.m. today—nine hours after the fire was first noticed—and the Wellington Fire Brigadesmen who were waiting on the wharf quickly extinguished the outbreak.
