CONCERN AT RISING HOSPITAL AND HARBOUR BOARD LEVIES

Deep concern was expressed at a special meeting of the Wanganui City Council last night of the ever-in-creasing amount of levies for the Harbour and Hospital Boards. The rate levy for 1950-51 will be £182,827, including a harbour levy of £29,500. In addition to this harbour rate there is in the city jate a total of £27,077 to be paid to the hospital and fire boards, the sum of £19,717 and £7630 respectively. Altogether this amounts to £56.577 out of a total levy of £182.827. The council is therefore th? collecting agent for other local bodies of the city to the extent of 31 per cent., or almost one-third of its total rate levy. Although the local body rates are increasing with the rise in capital value, the council would support fully any step to be taken which would limit the levies to be paid to local bodies. All members of the meeting were in full agreement in this matter.
