Hospital Representation

A letter was received at Tuesday s meeting of the Borough Council from the Minister of Health, Mr. J. T. Watts, declining to support the request of the council that the Taihape borough should be combined with the northern ridings of the Rangitikel County Council i n hospital representation, on the grounds that it would lead to administration difficulties. The Rangitikei County Council and the Wanganui Hospital Board wrote supporting Taihape in the matter. Cr. Gregory: They all support It except the "head.” Cr. Gordon moved that the Minister be communicated with again in regard to the matter, pointing out that the Taihape Borough Council had the support of the Hospital Board and Rangitikei County Council regarding the proposed change in representation. Cr. Ashenden seconded the motion, which was carried. PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ RUGBY. The Taihape Borough Council has granted £2 2s towards the cost of the Rangitikei primary schools’ Rugby tourney to be held at Ohakune this year. DRAMA group. “The development of the arts is something that the council should encourage,” said Cr. Ashenden, at Tuesday’s meeting of the Taihape Borough Council, when a letter was received from the Taihape Drama Group asking for the use of the supper rooms at a reduced rate. It was resc f that further inquiries be made, particularly as to whether the Drama Group requires seats to be shifted to the supper rooms for its meetings. COMMUNITY CENTRE ROOMS. “It was never intended that the Community Centre rooms should be used as a free meeting room for any organisation that cared to use them,’ remarked the Mayor, Mr. E. Loader, at the monthly meeting of the Taihape Borough Council. "Our generosity does not extend that far. Organisations that used to book the supper rooms are now holding meetings in the Community Centre rooms free of charge and we are losing revenue,” added His Worship. REQUEST DECLINED. The request of the Taihape Hockey Association for a reduction in the charge of fl for the use of No. 2 ground for hockey matches was declined by the Taihape Borough Council on Tuesday on the grounds that it was a reasonable charge under the circumstances. Dispute over town hall. The dispute between the Taihape Garden Club and the. local Basketball Association over a disturbance caused by the playing of basketball in the Town Hall when the monthly meeting of the Garden Club is in progress on the first Thursday in each month, was placed before the Borough Council on Tuesday evening. The Garden Club meets in the Town Hall supper rooms while basketball is played in the auditorium at the same time. A deputation, consisting of Messrs K. H. Mellsop and R. H- Lewis (Garden Club) and J. Temple and J. Bowden (Basketball Association) waited On the Borough Council in connection with the matter and Indicated that the parties were unable to agree and desired the council to settle the matter. The council decided to ask the Basketball Association to change its night to other than the first Thursday in the month. Mr. Lewis, in support of the Garden Club’s request, said that the club was a permanent hirer of the supper rooms and paid full rates since August 1947. Mr. Mellsop said it was well nigh impossible to hold meetings under existing conditions owing to the noise created by basketball. He thought it would be more of a hardship for the Garden Club to change one night in four than the Basketball Association. Mr Temple said he was representing more than 100 basketball players. It was impossible to eliminate noise when playing games. The Army and Navy had obtained permission for a lorry to bring in their teams. It would be difficult to change the night, he said. , . . . "We use the hall four nights a month and pay fl Is a night, ’ he said. "It would be difficult for us to change our night.” Mr. Bowden also spoke in support of the Basketball Association and added that permission had to be obtained from Wellington for the use of transport from the Army and Navy camps at Waiouru for personnel desiring to play basketball, and it would be difficult to change the night. In answer to Cr. Ashenden, MrMellsop said that the Garden Club had tried the large and small supper rooms, but the noise was most upsetting to the club meetings. He thought that the only way of solving the difficulty was to sound-proof the walls of the suspner room. The Mayor moved that the Basketball Association be asked io change their night. Cr. Gordon seconded the motion. In answer to a Question, Cr. Corbett expressed the opinion that the Badminton Club would be quite willing to change nights with the Basketball Association. Cr. Gregory moved an amendment that the Badminton Club he requested to change nights with the Basketball Association so that badminton, instead of basketball, would be nlaved on the night whe n the Garden Club holds its monthly meeting. Cr. Ashenden seconded the amendment, which was lost. The motion was carried. drama entertainment on SATURDAY NIGHT.
