More Milk Available In Wanganui This Winter Than Previously

“We have reached the extraordinary position this winter, tor the first time since 1944, where we have milk to spare,” said the chairman of the Wanganui Milk Treatment Corporation directorate, Mr. J. P. Wells, at the monthly meeting of the board yesterday. jiuring previous winters the corporation has had difficulty in obtaining sufficient supplies and its trucks have had to make trips as far afield as the Manawatu district. This winter, however, was very mild at the start and there was a good supply of feed. This and other has resulted in milk supplies being more plentiful throughout the Wellington province. Mr. Wells also commented yesterday that dairy farmers were paying more attention to their milk and supplies were of good quality. Reporting to the directors on operations during May, the manager of the treating house, M. S. V. Howells, stated that the quality of the milk had been good and the supply adequate. During May the total quantity of milk collected from suppliers was 89,562 gallons, of which 80,107 gallons were delivered to the treating house. Of the balance, 9455 gallons went to the cheese factory at Westmere and 532 gallons were separated for the Okoia butter factory. Milk supplied to vendors during May totalled 68,325 gallons, dairies took 6900 gallons, wholesale supplies I amounted to 753 gallons, ice cream I manufacturers used 15 gallons, 254 I gallons were supplied to schools and i 4067 gallons were separated for cream.
