SEWING MACHINES ARE STILL SHORT ON N.Z. MARKET
Many people have waited years to take delivery of a post-war car, but housewives endeavouring to purchase a sewing machine, especially an electric one, to replace their old machine, have found that they, too, must be patient. Sewing machines have been in short supply in New Zealand since the war and most firms have a long waiting list. The reason for the shortage, It is stated, is due to the insufficiency permitted to be imported under the licensing system. Britain is said to have ample supplies for export. The demand for elect r ’ic models is much greater than for the treadle type. The position is gradually easing but it is expected that it will be a long time before the market is satisfied. Second-hand machines are stated to be commanding a good price as a result of the dearth of new machines.
