WAGES DISPUTE HOLDS UP NEW YORK PAPER
NEW YORK, June 13 (Recd. 7.15 pm).—A rash of strikes is afflicting the united States in various sections of the country. A wages dispute between the Scrlpps-Howard-owned "New York World Telegram and Sun,” and the American Newspaper Guild, resulted in the. paper not publishing any edition today. It is the first time any major New York city newspaper of general circulation has been forced to halt publication for any reason. The newspaper’s 400 editorial and business employees belonging to the Guild struck in support of demands for a 10 per cent, general wage increase and other benefits. The strikers placed picket lines around the newspaper's four printing premises, and printers, stereotypers, machinists and other mechanical employees refused to cross them.
Nine major newspaper unions, including the “white collar” Newspaper Guild, last ryeek completed a mutual aid pact whereby they agreed to respect one another’s picket lines. The management abandoned hope of printing today after the paper had missed two of its seven editions.
Dairy companies’ employees are striking in several cities. One million people in the Washington area went without milk, which is being delivered only to children and sick persons. The Pennsylvania police arrested four pickets of the Milkmen’s Union for trying to stop trucks delivering milk. A prolonged strike at the American Enko rayon mill at Morristown, Tennessee, marki* by violence, is being investigated by a Senate labour subcommittee.
A wages dispute idled 7000 employees of the General Electric Corporation Factory at Erie, Pennsylvania.
Columbia Broadcasting System technicians in New York and Hollywood a;e striking for better working conditions. The system cancelled six television shows last night but claimed that only one would be interrupted tonight.
