Wanganui And Old Boys Decisively Defeat Marist

Dominating play in both sessions of the game, Wanganui and Old Boys decisively defeated Marist by 22 points to nil in the early game on the park. After holding the winners to a 6-nil lead at half-time, Marist fell away badly in the final half. D. McGregor was in excellent goal kicking form and contributed 10 of his side’s points. This was a fine achievement, considering the adverse conditions and the heavy ball. The teams were:— Wanganui and Old Boys: P. Bosher. Brydone, R. Lockett, G. Smith, J. Little, Jones, W. Matenga, I. Jones, W. Anderson, J. Fitchett, D. McGregor, D. Fitchett, W. Scott, M. Griffin, B. Jones. Marist: N. Wallace. P. Barron, B. Corliss, G. Healey, S. Blake. B. Waitai, J. Olliver, N. Crowley, J. Heagney, R. McPhun, B. O’Leary, D. O’Leary, M. Daley, M. Rupena, E. Huwyler. Forcing the pace from the start Wanganui and Old Boys had Marist penned to their side of half way. From a mid-field scrum Matenga worked the blind side and Smith made a challenging run on the left flank, but Healey, the Marist wing, tackled resolutely Wanganui and Old Boys were shading the Marist forwards and won two successive scrums. From one of them Matenga sent his hacks away and Smith, going at top

speed, crashed through Healey’s tackle and scored. The kick failed. Old Boys increased their lead when McGregor goaled from a long range penalty—Wanganui Old Boys 6, Marist 0. On the Marist side Wallace, the fullback, was coming to his side’s rescue time after time with a good wet-day display. Corliss w r as unlucky in not goaling with a great kick from 45 yards out, the ball missing the posts by a narrow margin. The score was unchanged at the interval. The second half had only been in progress two minutes when Smith kicked the ball over the line and scored. McGregor converted and the score was against Marist 11-nil. A well placed kick by Little had Marist in trouble until Wallace relieved by finding touch. The Marist defence began to crumble before the continued thrust of Old Boys and in a storming attack Matenga scored for McGregor to convert. The ground was becoming heavy as the result of rain showers and players were having difficulty in keeping their balance. Before the final whistle went Wanganui Old Boys added another six points to the tally, McGregor goaling from a penalty and D. Fitchett scoring an unconverted try. The final score was: Wanganui Old Boys 22, Marist 0. Mr. G. Wallace was referee.
