Mudlarks Were In Their Element On Saturday For Manawatu Winter Opening

(By.

.“KESTREL”)

Mudlarks were in their element at Awapuni on Saturday for the opening day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s winter meeting, track conditions being so bad that postponement of the fixture would not have caused much surprise. Steady rain fell during the morning and the going, soft early, became very sloppy after a couple of events.

Under the circumstances backers did remarkably well, two favourites winning and five other winners being second in the other of betting, the only big upset being provided by the Wanganui representative. Paddy Joe, winner of the Manawatu Winter Cup. The attendance under the unpleasant conditions was very satisfactory. The frequent showers kept many intending investors away from the totalisator, the amount handled being £50.528 10s, a decrease of £13,486 comr- rad with the £64,014 10s put through on the corresponding day last year. The doubles pool totalled £5567, and only 204 ten-shilling tickets, were taken out on Paddy Joe. Of these 27 were reinvested on Mangatiti, winner of the second “leg," the Stewards’ Handicap, backers of the double receiving a dividend at the | rate of £342 15s 6d for £l. During the betting on the second race an electrical fault held up oper-, ations for several minutes, but racing did not get behind schedule and the ( day’s programme was finished on time. The leading horseman, W. J.' Broughton, was on two winners, Fin-; ola in the Suburban Handicap and Royal Bouquet in the first division of | the June Handicap. i ; OUTSIDERS FILL PLACES Outsiders filled the dividend-paying places in the Manawatu Winter Cup, 1 Paddy Joe and Royal Crown fighting out their Foxton Cup finish again., with Arcara, at a surprisingly good • price, finishing third. Heavy rain fell during the race and I at stages the field splashed water In sheets. Running out of the straight, I Vadoz and Royal Crown led from Ar-i' cara, Offender, Omega, Paddy Joe, La Modelle, Dakota. Brookland and Im-1 perial, with Kippo at the rear. When ' ■ they reached the back stretch Royal' 1 Crown was a clear leader, and Paddy? Joe had been moved up on terms I' with Vadoz, with Arcara, La Modelle,l Wembley and Imperial next. Still: further improving his position, Paddy Joe tackled Royal Crown at the halfmile, where Vadoz was dropping back, Arcara, La Modelie, Offender and Imperial being the closest attendees of; the leading pair. Drawing out in the run to the judge, Paddy Joe and 1 Royal Crown fought" out the finish in ' courageous style, Paddy Joe getting | a neck verdict. Three lengths back! came Arcara, ahead of Offender, with! La Modelle fifth. Then came Earldale <who finished from well back), Imperial, Mission, Dakota, Bursar, I Brookland, Kippo and Wembley. MANGATITI’S SPRINT Now trained at Awapuni, Mangatiti ! was w-ell supported for the open sprint, the Stewards’ Handicap, and he duly won from Peaseblossom and Defence. At the end of two furlongs Blue - Skimmers had charge from Sentimental, Pan Walla, Peaseblossom, Robin Tor and Defence, with Mangatiti handy. Crossing the top Blue Skimmers and Peaseblossom were together,! ahead of Sentimental, Solimbine, De-I fence, Robin Tor and Mangatiti, And Peaseblossom took the lead entering' the straight. Then Mangatiti swept' up with a challenge which prevailed in the final half-furlong, Mangatiti winning by half a length. Defence came home strongly a length and a half away, taking third money off! Blue Skimmers, with Playboy fifth Ned Kelly, Solimbine, Zealander and Glide In next to finish. STEN WINS STEEPLECHASE Dawn March and Sten were best backed in the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase and the pair fought out the finish, with Sten winning easily. Sergeant Jack stood on the mark at the start, and when he did get away he propped and dumped his rider at the first fence. Mr Thunder lost his rider at the second, and Sten, who had assumed the role of pacemaker, piloted the field over the double at the back of the course, with Foxtonian, Jigaboo, Dawn March, Aratoro and Hinewaka next. Foxtonian and Sten had turns in the lead, but Sten led Dawn March, Gallant Bill, Aratoro and Hinewaka the second time over | the double. At the second last fence | Saffron Walden fell and brought down 1 Jigaboo, Sten going on to lead Dawn 1 March and Hinewaka to the final ob- i stable. Over the last furlong Sten was not in danger of defeat, winning' by eight lengths from Dawn March, who was two lengths in front of Hinewaka. Gallant Bill was a fair fourth, I and Mana-wanui, Oratoro and Sailor, Boy followed at intervals, with Consult a couple of furlongs back. COLLINSON HURDLES Carrying topwoigbt of 10.9, Royal | Moutoa led all the way to win the‘ L. H. Collinson Hurdles from Fov- j eran and Carey, with the favourite, | Niloch, fourth. Running through the straight at the end of six furlongs Royal Moutoa was ten lengths ahead of Niloch, Voltage, First Act and Foveran, hr‘ the lastnamed moved up to join Nile* ’i at the five furlongs, where Royal Moj'oa’s margin had been reduced to lour lengths. Foveran followed Royal Moutoa into the stranght, but the topweight went away again to win by five lengths. Carey c ame home solid- j ly for third, two lengths back, ahead : of Niloch and Minion, with a gap; back to Voltage, First Act and Re-1 suit. HURDLER FROM STRATFORD I The Stratford stable of F. S. Hill ‘ provided the winner of the opening event, the Ruahine Hack Hurdles, in 1 Epic Hero, ridden by J. Harris, who! is having a “trot’’ in jumping events.! Retrieve led early from Prince • Coronach, Epic Hero, Sheilwyn, Silver Line and Merry Song. The last-, lamed came down at the third fence.' in front of the stands, as also did Pare Pare, and Epic Hero ran to the | front at the half-mile, showing the' way into the straight to Prince Coro- j nach, Sheilwyn and First Line. EpiC| Hero drew out to win by four lengths from Prince Coronach, who was ai

siimiai uioictiiutf dllcctu OL OIIcllW yil. General Lytup did best of the remainder to beat Silver Line for fourth. MAIDEN DIVISIONS With only one scratching in the Maiden Stakes, leaving 43 runners, there were two divisions, the 1 two-year-old Admiral Derision winning the first and Happy Man leading throughout to win the second. i Most prominent as the first division turned into the straight were Special I Script, Fantham. Admiral Derision and Black Orchid. Admiral Derision went to the front at the distance and held off Fantham’s challenge by a neck. Four lengths back came Special Script, with Black Orchid fourth. Happy Man had charge as the second division ran across the top, with Meriden, Late Edition, Brabazon and Sea Lion next. Running on strongly Happy Man won by four lengths from Meriden, who beat Sea Lion narrowly for second place, followed by Pickup. FINOLA ALL THE WAY Though each-way favourite for the Suburban Handicap Finola was at a generous price considering that Broughton was in the saddle, and she ’jave her backers no uneasy moments. ! Beginning brilliantly, Finola soon ! had a break on Choy Loy, with Ken--1 tucky Flight, Lady Moyra, Roscarea, Hadfield and Snowless next. On the ■ home turn Finola was going smoothly [two lengths ahead of Choy Loy, and she drew away to win* by five lengths, i Four lengths back came Rosearna, with Fyxen fourth and Rosearna. Lady Moyra and Koa Hine at the head of the others. ROYAL BOUQUET AND AMBERGRIS Royal Bouquet proved an easy winner in the first division of the June Hack Handicap, and the second went [to the Nelson-trained Ambergris, who paid close on a score. i In the first division Royal Bouquet, St. Martin and Aquelio were the leaders into the straight after Royal i Baron had made the early running. | Then Royal Bouquet came away to I win by tfiree lengths from St. Mari tin, who was five lengths in front of Aquelio. Pym’s Pride was fourth, ■ ahead of Alumnus. 1 After The Robe had made the pace for half a mile Ambergris took over ;in the second division and was not headed. He led into the straight from • Miss Beau, Master Kip and Murray- ’ field, and ran on solidly to win by .three lengths from Master Kip, w’ho |ran an erratic course in the straight, i A length away came Miss Beau, with I Murrayfield, Rappel and Faxtavia Inext to finish. j Details of results:— RUAHINE HURDLES HANDICAP (Of £400; 1 mile, 5 furlongs). , 15/5 — Epic Hero, 9.0, J.
