PERSONALS.

Four members of the Taihape Drama Group, Mrs. H. McLachlan (president), Mrs. K. H. Mellsop, Miss June Lewis (secretary) and Miss Shirley Thurston, attended the Drama School at Hamilton during the weekend. Miss Moyra Taylor, of Wellington, spent the week-end in Taihape at the guest of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Gordon. Miss B. Collins, of Whangarei, is the guest of Miss P. Bond. A GLASSY EYE LOOKED LIKE “DEATH.” It happened at the recent Taihape R.S.A. reunion. An ex-serviceman became unconscious when he fell and struck his chin on the edge of the piano. Joe Louis himself could not have delivered a better knock-out blow. A friend who rather fancied himself as an “amateur doctor” decided to examine the “patient,” and felt his pulse, tested his heart beat, and then had a look at one of his eyes. As it happened, the patient had a glass eye but the “amateur doctor” was unaware of this and decided that the glassy stare meant only one thing —death. He panicked and summoned a local doctor, who however, was able to put his mind at rest and assure him that the "patient” was not dead even though his glass eye might convey a false impression to those who could not distinguish between artificial eyes and the real thing. The returned soldier who made the mistake is still trying to "live down” the incident. FARMERS’ BALL. Big preparations are under way in connection with the annual ball of the Rangitikei A. and P. Association, to be held in the Town Hall, Taihape, on Wednesday, June 7. A Palmerston North orchestra will provide the music, assisted by a Taihape dance band known as the “Rhythm Rascals.” A I poultry supper will be provided. Particulars are advertised. HOUSE PROPERTY SOLD AT HHHTAHI. A seven-roomed house on a quarteracre section at Hihitahi, next to D. Brophy’s store, was sold at the end of last week. The house has been vacant for six months. The purchaser is a married man with six children. VITAL STATISTICS. Births, deaths and marriages registered at Taihape last month show an increase in each case on the figures for the corresponding month last year. The figures are as follows, with those for May, 1949, In parentheses: Births, 18 (10); deaths, 4 (2); marriages, 5 (2).
