HUNTERVILLE DEFEATS ATHLETIC RUGBY TEAM

HUNTERVILLE, jLast Night ‘OO. —Athletic experienced its first defeat this season and Hunterville maintained its sequence of wins on its home ground since 1947 when the two teams jnet at the Hunterville Domain on Saturday. The game was full of interest and notable for line-kicking, hard tackling, good forward play and good passing rushes by the backs on the part of both teams. From the opening whistle, Hunterville began to press hard and, after three minutes play, McDonald secured possession from a scrum near the Athletic twenty-five and dashed over to draw first blood. G. Bartlett converted. After the kick-off, Athletic held play in Hunterville territory and from a scrum inside of the twenty-live line, Owens sent the ball to Pauranl to Smith to Pull to Stantiall, who scored near the corner. The kick failed. Hunterville began to press again and, after 13 minutes play, was awarded a free kick and G. Bartlett made no mistake with it. Hunterville, S; Athletic, 3. Hunterville was now lighting desperately in an effort to make the game secure and there was quite spell when no further points were added by either side. The game changed, however, when the Athletic full back Hutton joined a back attack to make an extra man and, securing possession, dashed over to score a try which Kinloch converted. With the score at 17-all and 10 minutes to go both sides played desperately to lake the lead. The lackling was deadly. With seven minutes of play remaining, Hunterville was awarded a free kick from about 20 yards out. straight in front of the posts. Bartlett made no mistake. For the remainder of the game, both teams played hard although the pace was beginning to tell. There was no further score, however, and the game ended Hunterville, 20; Athletic, 17. Mr. C. H.
