SAFFRON WALDEN MAY WIN WANGANUI STEEPLES

The Wanganui Steeplechase, which carries a stake of £lOOO, will be the principal event today for the concluding day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting. Included in the field of ten carded is the Grandstand Steeplechase winner Christopher Wren, as well as Gay Rouen, winner of the Waverley and Egmont Steeplechases, and Master Patrick, who won the Adamson Steeples at Hawera. Saffron Walden, runner-up in the Century Hurdles, is also an acceptor. The two hurdle races have drawn poor fields of six and four, with one dual engagement, but the supporting events have been well supported. Six horses were balloted out of the Russell Grace Handicap with the right of re-entry, and provision has been made for divisions in the Castlecliff Handicap, with 31 acceptors, nine over the safety number.
