HOLIDAY SPORTING ATTRACTIONS
The North v. South Island hockey match, the Wanganui Jockey Clubs winter meeting, and the representative Rugby match between Wanganui and Taranaki, will be the main sporting attractions in Wanganui during the King’s Birthday week-end. At Cook’s Gardens jthis afternoon, added interest will be given to the inter-island hockey match in view of the forthcoming tour of Australia by a N.ew Zealand team. Today’s match will be the first time a North v. South fixture has been played in Wanganui. The curtain-raiser will be between Wanganui Colts and Manawatu Colts for the Winter Shield. The first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting will take place today when the feature races will be the Connolly Handicap, Grandstand Steeplechase, and the Century Hurdles. The time-honoured Wanganui Steeplechase will be run on Monday. Commencing this afternoon in the Drill Hall will be a representative badminton match for the Slazenger Cup between Wanganui and Wellington. The match will be the second in which the Wanganui team has played in the North Island (southern zone) series. A tournament arranged by the Wanganui Women’s Basketball Association will be played today, commencing at 9 a.m. The South Taranaki Rifle Association’s championship will bo held at the Putiki rifle range on Monday. On Monday morning at Spriggens Park the traditional Rugby match between Wanganui and Taranaki will be played.
