UNITED NATIONS’ APPEAL FOR RELIEF OF CHILDREN IN DISTRESS OVERSEAS
WELLINGTON, May 30, (PA).—ln July and August the people of New Zealand will be asked to give £500,000 to save the lives of millions of sick, ill-fed children in less fortunate countries overseas. As in 1948, when New Zealanders gave £400,000 for this purpose every individual and organisation in the Dominion will be asked to give one day’s pay, income, or profit. If that were done the collection will total n\ore than twice the target figure.
Under the joint patronage of the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, and with the Mayors of four principal cities as vice-patrons, a National Executive representing all sections of the community is directing this 1950 United Nations Appeal for children. Its chairman, will be Mr. Charles S. Falconer. Organisation of the appeal is being done through the 20 postal districts of New Zealand. Practically every organisation in New Zealand would be directly associated with the appeal through representation on national council of sponsors. “We believe that the people of this country can and will give £500,000 for the relief of the widespread distress that still exists among children in many countries of the world today,” Mr. Falconer said. ,T Since the nations of the world set up a United Nations international children’s emergency fund, the New Zealand people have established a proud record of generosity, but we cannot st res too strongly the continuing need for help to sick and undernourished children in many countries.’’ Mr. Falconer said that the New Zealand Government had decided recently to contribute another £lOO,OOO to the fund and many spontaneous offers of assistance had already been received by the executive of U.N.A.C. in New Zealand.
