Wanganui visitors to Hawera this
week were Mrs. J. Small and Mrs. R. Orton. Mrs. T. liine, Victoria Avenue, has returned after visiting Wellington. Mrs. A. Gardiner, of Seatoun, Wellington, is the guest of Mrs. A. E. Carpenter, London Street. Mrs T. E. Collins, of Rongotea, returned recently after a 14 months' trip overseas. They visited England, Scotland, Ireland and the Continent. Miss Hettie Lloyd, who died recently in Napier, held the position of Sister at the Wanganui Karitane Hospital several years ago and had to resign on account of ill-health. Mrs. Porter and Miss E. Warnock, of Wanganui, and Mrs P. Bary, of Kangitikei, were among district players who competed at the open day of the Manwatu Ladies’ Golf Club at Hokowhitu on Tuesday. There were 90 entries. A “Shop on wheels’’ Is to be opened in the Wellington Hospital by the Wellington centre of the New Zealand Red Cross. The Wellington Hospital Board agreed at its meeting last week to give the proposal a trial. Mrs. A- F. Morley, wife of the De-puty-High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, who recently arrived in Wellington, is a good linguist. She is Australian-born and was at school in France and Switzerland. During the war she worked for four years in the censors department and last year she translated a biography of Bismarck for a London firm. Junior Group B.M.S. The monthly meeting of the Junior B.M S. (group) was held last week in Harmony Hall. The programme was short and varied. Pianoforte solos were given by Mary Rush. Beth Ammundsen and Alvin Bradshaw. Betty Bennett played violin solos. Musical chairs provided much amusement and an interesting “musical quiz” was conducted by Miss Edith Smith. Next month a sonata and sonatina night is to be held. Musical Afternoon. To augment the funds for the purchase oi wool and materials for a forthcoming bazaaj, St. Luke’s Ladies’ Guild held a very successful musical afternoon and bring and buy stall on Tuesday. Visitors were welcomed by Miss L. Wilson and the door hostess Mrs C. Howes. The well-stocked stall of produce, plants, handwork and children's clothing was well managed Dy Mesdames Fletcher, Lepper and Stent. The vice-president, Miss L. Wilson explained the purpose of the effort and welcomed those who were contributing to the programme. Items were given as follows:—Songs, Mrs J. P. Moirison, Mrs. I. L. Peters, Mrs N. Owen; elocution, Mrs. E. Pengelly and Miss Fluer Blackmore. The accompanist was Mrs. L. M. Mead. Miss Wilson thanked the artists and presented each with a spray and also expressed thanks to Mrs. F. H. Uttley, who had arranged the programme. She was handed a spray. A delicious aftebnoon tea was served by the tea committee, of which Mrs. Hibbard was convener.
