SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mrs. E. M. Gray, St. Hill Street, has returned home after visiting Rotorua. Mrs. Stanley Read has returned to Wanganui from Rotorua and Hamilton, where she spent the week-end. Mrs. Alan Brown, Hipango Terrace, has returned after a holiday of two weeks during which she visited the Chateau, Wairakei and Rotorua. Mr. and Mrs. Bailey Martin, of Grey House, Collegiate School, have returned from a month’s holiday touring Australia. They made ihe journey from New Zealand to Sydney and back by air. Mrs. Lesbia Paine, of Hamilton, official drama tutor for the Adult Education Centre, and her daughter, Miss Helen Paine, of Wellington, spent the week-end in Wanganui as the guests of Mrs. Percy Evans, Nelson Street. Mrs. Paine was a member of the teaching staff of the Wanganui Technical College about 10 years ago. Walking On Nylon The first carpet on the American market with a pile completely woven of nylon has been introduced in New York. It is claimed to wear longer i and be easier to clean. It is not inflammable, and if put away clean will be mothproof. Based on a new method of weaving, the carpet includes contrasts of pile height, giving a “basrelief” effect to the scroll-like pat*tern. It has a five-ply cotton backing. Kenya, a Housewife’s Paradise. “From what I’ve seen of housewives in Scotland, in Australia, and now in New Zealand, I think Kenya must be a housewife’s paradise,’ said Mrs. W. Russell, a visitor from Kenya, who is paying her first visit to New Zealand. Mrs. Russell was a school teacher, who trained in her home town of Hamilton, Lanarkshire, before going to Nairobi to live 28 years ago.
