Out On Wrist. In the course of his work at the Imlay Works yesterday Mr. D. Huanui, of Ratana Pa, suffered a cut wrist. He was taken by ambulance to the Wanganui Hospital, where he was treated as an out-patient. Call To Fire. The Wanganui Fire Brigade responded to a call at 6.30 last night to a rubbish fire which occurred in the rear of premises adjoining the Provincial Hotel. The outbreak was quelled before any serious damage could be done. Schools Resume. Pupils of the Wanganui Collegiate School and the New Zealand Friends’ School, St. John s Hill, began their second term yesterday. The second term studies of the St. George's Preparatory School will begin on Friday. Wallet Stolen From Footballer. A Taihape footballer has reported the loss of a wallet, containing £l7, which was left in his coat pocket in the dressing shed at the Taihape grandstand on Saturday afternoon, while he was playing football. The wallet has since been recovered but the money is missing. Comrades Remembered. Three former comrades who died in the past year were remembered at the annual meetiig of the Wanganui branch of the South African War Veterans’ Association, held recently, when tribute was paid to their memory. They were Messrs. J. Georgetti, J. N, Kelly, and G. W. Taylor. Mr. D. Jackson sang “Requiem.” Meat Schedules The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board announces that minimum schedule prices for the highest grades in each class of meat operating in the North Island from and including May 29, are as folicws: Lamb 16d, wethers 11 5-Bd, ewes 8 3-Bd, ox beef 57s a' lOOlbs., cow beef 47s 6d a lOOlbs, boner beef 34s a lOOlbs. The South Island prices are the same with the exception of 11 3-8 d for wethers and 8 5-8 d for ewes. The increase in the lamb schedule operated from May 22. Rotary Forum. Attended by 150 Rotarians, including 21 from Wanganui, a very successful Rotary forum was held in Hawera last Saturday. The gathering was attended by district governor, Dr. W. P. Gordon (Stratford). Addresses were given by the Minister of Maori Affairs. Mr. E. B. Gordon, and Messrs. G. N. Boulton (Wanganui), F. W. Horner (Hawera), and A. Morcom-Green (Onehunga). Clubs represent included New Plymouth, Wanganui, Eltham, Stratford, Onehunga, and Taumarunui. Boys For Flock House. Under the sponsorship of the New Zealand Sheepowners’ Fund for the Acknowledgement of Debt to British Seamen, 11 British boys have recently arrived at Flock House, Bulls, comprising the first party to come to New Zealand since the war. The youths are aged between 15 and 18. All are sons of Royal Navy and Merchant Navy men killed or disabled during World War 11. At Flock House they will undergo a period of farm training before being settled on the land in New Zealand. Ignition Key Left In Truck. The ignition key was left in a truck which was taken from outside the bedroom window of a house near the Utiku metal quarry on Monday night. The truck belonged to a Hawera resident, who intended to make a quick get-away in the morning and had verything ready, including a full petrol tank. The truck was apparently pushed out on to the road and proceeded downhill with the ignition off so as not to awaken the occupants of the house. Load Restriction On Bridge. A load restriction has been placed on the Patea River Bridge on the No. 11 Hawera-Wanganui State Highway, The following weight limits for any heavy motor vehicle using the bridge have been fixed: The maximum gross weight of any two-axled vehicle is not to exceed 10 tons, with a maximum load of five tons on any one axle, and the maximum gross weight of any multi-axled vehicle is not to exceed 16 tons, with a maximum axle load of five tons for spaced axles and 3i tons for tandem axles. Rehabilitation Loans. Rehabilitation loans worth £74,170,986, had been authorised for 91,642 exservicemen and women by the end of April. In April itself 993 loans were authorised valued at £987,864. Loans have been for farms, businesses, houses, furniture, tools of trade, and other miscellaneous purposes. Loans to purchase farms were increased to 6719, which involved finance worth £28,894,120. This includes 1062 exservicemen settled on Crown lands. The end of April saw bousing loans brought to a total of 30,049, worth £35,507,923. Hockey Visitors. Members of the North Island hockey team who will play against the South Island at Cook’s Gardens on Saturday, will arrive in Wanganui on Friday afternoon and during their stay in the city will be accommodated at the Station Hotel. All the South Island players will be billeted out. With a few exceptions, most of them will stay with officers of the Wanganui Hockey Association. On Saturday night both teams will bo' entertained at. a dinner in the Provincial Hotel. Prominent, officials, including the president and secretary of the New Zealand Association, will be present at the dinner. State Houses Allocated. A further 129 tenancies were allocated to ex-servicemen during April under the system whereby at least half of all newly vacant or newly completed State rental units go to exservicemen of the recent war. This brought the total number of such allocations to 12,331. Allocations were made on a basis ,of relative urgency by the Rehabilitation Housing Com* mittees in each centre. In the Wellington area, which includes Wanganui. Manawatu, Wairarapa, and Hutt Valley, 42 houses were allocated, making the total allocation for the district 4010.
