Public Service To Make Representations On Subsidy Removal

WELLINGTON, Last Night (P.A.) —The national 'executive committee of the Public Service Association has considered a number of representations from branches arising out of the removal of subsidies and price controls, said the general secretary (Mr. J. Turnbull) today. It has decided to advise branches that preliminary representations already have been made to the Government in conjunction with other State employee organisations and that further discussions were expected shortly, said Mr. Turnbull. Several branches had asked for authority to hold general meetings with kindred organisations and it was decided to empower them to do I his. The Bay of Plenty section considered that as many public servants were unable to maintain a reasonable standard of living the ban on outside employment should be removed. It was decided to advise the section that the association opposed public servants being subject to restrictions which did not apply to other people, but also considered that its main duty was to continue to strive for a wage standard in the service which would support a reasonable standard of living on a 40-hour week. Because of the liability of transfer, other sections expressed concern with the impact on the public servant, of increased State rentals. They were advised that it was hoped to discuss the whole question of the housing of public servants with a Government committee at an early date, said Mr. Turnbull.
