I. R. BROWN WINS THE “HOPEFUL CUP” AT CASTLECLIFF LINKS
With two cards of 36 and 33—69, 11. R. Brown won the “Hopeful Cup” jat the Castlecliff Golf Links on Saturday. No less than four players filled the runner-up position, D. S. Corby 31, .37 —6B, A. Cheesman 32, .36 -68, W. Heath 35. 33 -68, and G. Pedley 36, 32 —6B; K. Aiken, J. H. Whelton, R. Humphrey, and L. Also.p, all 67, G. W. Reid, G. Bognuda, and C. Benson each 166. Second round trophy winners were: Senior: D. S. Corby 37; runners-up, J. 11. Whetton .35; F. J. Currie and C. whetton 34. Juniors: L. K. Aiken .37; J. McMaster and J. Sheehy both 35. The week-end stableford was won by C. Taylor, 39; runner-up, H. Sherman 36. Next Saturday the first qualifying round of three for the club championships will bo featured—senior, intermediate, and junior- and a special class entitled “improvers’ championship” for 30 handicappers. The match committee requests that players start as early as possible, and play will commence at noon. The captain’s trophy this season will go to the player with the best nett aggregate score over the three championship qualifying rounds. A team of four will represent Castlecliff at Marton next Sunday on the occasion of the Manawatu-Wan-ganui districts’ annual teams tournament. D. S. Corby, H. Brodie, J. Ibbetson, and G. Moulin. Owing to the ladies’ annual tourney on the weekend of 27th and 28th of this month, men members are notified that there will be no official competition on 'those two days. A team of about 20 will visit Waverley for the annual match for the Corby Cup on Sunday, May 28. The first, annual King’s Birthday two-day tournament will feature a 72hole medal match, with morning and afternoon stroke matches each day. Play will be for both men and ladies and post entries only will be taken.
