HARBOUR BOARD DOES NOT WANT INCREASE IN ITS PERSONNEL
Approval of a membership of ten members —six from the city and four from the contributing county councils—was expressed at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board. The matter was raised as he result of a letter from the New Zealand Harbours Association, which stated that the policy of the present Government was opposed to non-elective members of local bodies. The letter pointed out that the Wanganui Harbour Board had a Government nominee and a representative of the Waterside Workers’ Union, which made the total membership 12. The associaion asked if the board would be satisfied to continue with ten members after the Government and waterside workers’ representatives had vacated their seats, or would the board like an increase? If so, the association would like to know the reasons and the grounds for such an increase. ‘‘lt has been mentioned before that we agree on the principle of an elected board,” said the chairman (Mr E. A. Millward). “We have ten elected members, four from the counties and six from the city. While we have nothing personal against Mr Cummings (Government representative) and Mr Bergen (watersiders), I would like to move that we stick to the membership of ten. ’
